Short Description:
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is now associated with approximately 70% of oral and oropharyngeal cancers and has single-handedly changed the face of head and neck cancers over the past 30 years. Previously, oral cancers were typically found in older men with a long history of deleterious habits such as tobacco use and high alcohol intake. Now, advanced oral and oropharyngeal cancer can be found in women, individuals as young as their late teens, and those who have never smoked nor drank alcohol. The common denominator in all these incidences is the cancer's association with HPV. This session is designed for the clinician, researcher, and other healthcare professional to improve recognition of HPV-associated head and neck cancers, provide insight on how best to screen patients, and when to refer to oncology.
