In this presentation, Cassandra White, PharmD, BCACP, BCGP, will explore the intricate landscape of opioid pharmacology and review the potential risks associated with these powerful analgesics. The focus of this activity will extend to the critical intersection of opioids with other high-risk medications. The presenter will also review the mitigating risks of opioid therapy when combined with other medications, optimizing pain management, and ensuring patient safety when combining opioid therapy with dangerous medications.
Objectives:
1. Learners will recognize the risks and benefits of opioid therapy, and the importance of individualized treatment plans based on patient characteristics.
2. Learners will analyze the interactions between opioids and other high-risk medications, such as benzodiazepines, muscle relaxants, or certain antidepressants.
3. Learners will understand the importance of collaboration among healthcare professionals, including physicians, pharmacists, and other specialists, in managing patients on opioid therapy.
4. Learners will apply evidence-based strategies for mitigating dangerous medication combinations and the risks associated with opioid therapy, including constipation, nausea and vomiting, and respiratory depression.
5. Learners will integrate the latest guidelines and best practices related to opioid prescribing, with a focus on safety considerations and the avoidance of dangerous medication combinations into their practice.

Dr. Cassandra White is a 2012 graduate of Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Albany, New York. After earning her Doctor of Pharmacy degree with a concentration in economics, she completed a post-graduate year-1 pharmacy practice residency at the VA Maine Healthcare System in Chelsea, Maine. Dr. White began her career in academia at Husson University, Bangor, Maine, in 2013 and was promoted to Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice in 2019.
Dr. White started her career in 2005 as a pharmacy technician. Over time, she gained experience working at various pharmacies. She is board certified as an Ambulatory Care Pharmacist and a Geriatric Pharmacist by the American Pharmacists Association. Dr. White is also a member of the Maine Pharmacy Association, American College of Clinical Pharmacy, and American Pharmacists Association. She was on the Board of Directors for the Maine Pharmacy Association for five years and served as President from 2016 through 2019.
Dr. White is the proud recipient of multiple awards and honors. These include the HUSOP Teaching Excellence Award for Pharmacy Practice (2020), P2 Teacher of the Year (2020), P4 Teacher of the Year (2016, 2020), National Community Pharmacists Association Pharmacy Leadership Award for Maine (2018), Distinguished Young Pharmacist for Maine (2016), HUSOP Faculty Preceptor of the Year (2016), American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Teacher of the Year (2016), and Who's Who of American Universities (2012). She represents Husson University College of Health and Pharmacy as a clinical pharmacist for Maine Dartmouth Geriatric Medicine in Augusta, Maine. Dr. White is extremely passionate about her work and believes that teaching pharmacy students and serving patients in the community is her calling in life.
Dr. White is a former soccer and basketball player at Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and competed on three division championship teams during her collegiate career. She is an avid runner and completed a full marathon in 2015. Dr. White has finished 21 triathlons with her sister. She also enjoys traveling and spending time with her family and friends.
