Introduction to Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine focuses on introducing participants to osteopathic principles and practices. These presentations review the four tenets of osteopathic medicine, osteopathic manipulative treatment, somatic dysfunction, characteristics of direct and indirect OMT techniques, and the T.A.R.T. format used to palpate somatic dysfunction.

As part of this presentation, participants will learn soft tissue OMT, including indications and contraindications for soft tissue OMT, positioning the patient in a safe and comfortable manner while diagnosing and treating somatic dysfunction, and demonstrating efficient physician ergonomics while diagnosing and treating somatic dysfunction using soft tissue OMT.

AOA Grievance Policy:

Dr. Brian Degenhardt is a 1989 graduate of Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery. He completed his rotating internship at Grandview Medical Center from 1989-90 and was a resident in osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) at A.T. Still University-Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (ATSU-KCOM) from 1991-93. Dr. Degenhardt is assistant vice president for osteopathic research at ATSU and director of A.T. Still Research Institute. In this capacity, he oversees numerous areas of research, particularly directing research in the areas of palpatory diagnosis and osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT). He is also director of DO-Touch.NET, an international practice-based research network assessing the clinical usefulness of manipulative medicine. His published work demonstrates a broad scope of research, including evaluation of the reliability of palpatory diagnostic tests, otitis media, and pneumonia in the elderly, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, objectification of somatic dysfunction, evaluating the association of biomarkers with OMT, pain, and health benefits of wellness programs. Based on his research experience, he has developed the Advancing Skills in Osteopathy program, a program offered to doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs) globally at all stages of training that utilizes state-or-the-art instrumentation to provide objective feedback to advance individuals palpatory skills.

Dr. Degenhardt is board certified in NMM/OMM and by the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME).

ATSU-Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine


Eric Snider, DO, is an associate professor at A.T. Still University’s Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (ATSU-KCOM). He serves as the Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine department chairperson and as the program director for the Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (ONMM) residency. Dr. Snider is board certified in Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine & Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. He earned his Doctor of Osteopathy from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (1999), and completed his internship and residency at Northeast Regional Medical Center (1999-2002).
