This presentation will demonstrate common misconceptions regarding exercise and deliver examples of safe, effective exercise programs for all patient populations. The presenters will review the positive effects of exercise programs like reducing chronic disease, weight loss, improving strength and balance, etc.
Learning Objectives:
· Learners will identify exercise programs that will support and improve the health of their patients.
· Learners will apply and promote exercise programs to improve their patient’s health.
· Learners will differentiate the exercise programs that will be most helpful to their patients based on their pre-existing health conditions.
· Learners will confidently prescribe exercise programs to improve their patients’ global metabolic conditions and decrease their mortality.
· Learners will be able to assemble a strengthening and exercise program specifically constructed and modified for their individual patients.
· Learners will be empowered to better meet the whole-body needs of their patients by addressing a vital cornerstone of health which is their physical and metabolic conditioning.
Accreditation Statement:
The Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. MAOPS designates this program for a maximum of 1 AOA Category 1-A CME credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation.

Dr. Jared Nichols is a physician specializing in Family Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT), Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine, and Addiction Medicine. He also holds a certificate in Integrative Medicine. Dr. Nichols works at Access Family Care, a local FQHC in Joplin, Missouri, where he focuses on non-opioid pain management and provides holistic, patient-centered care for individuals with musculoskeletal pain and various addictions. His treatments include OMT, acupuncture, diagnostic injections, and health coaching. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Nichols is an Associate Professor of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine at Kansas City University—Joplin Campus. He directs the undergraduate OMM fellowship, conducts research, and teaches OMT and primary care skills to first- and second-year medical students.
Dr. Nichols completed his Doctor of Osteopathy degree in 2014 from A.T. Still University—Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (ATSU-KCOM) in Kirksville, Missouri. He then completed his Family Medicine and OMT residency at Capital Region Medical Center, Jefferson City, Missouri, in 2017, and a post-graduate fellowship in Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine at the University of North Texas Health Science Center, Fort Worth, Texas, in 2019. In 2024, he completed his board certification in Addiction Medicine from the American Osteopathic Academy of Addiction Medicine. Dr. Nichols is also board-certified in Family Medicine and OMT by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians and in Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine by the American Osteopathic Board of Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine. Dr. Nichols's diverse experiences include working in emergency rooms, nursing homes, opioid clinics, and lecturing for student board preparation.
A self-proclaimed "Missourian for life," Dr. Nichols lives in Joplin with his wife, Jourdan, and their four daughters. In his free time, he enjoys teaching and has interests in voice manipulation, regenerative medicine, exercise, and pinball.

Dr. Mindy Hansen is triple board certified in Family Medicine and Sports Medicine by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Medicine and in Osteopathic Neuromuscular Medicine by the American Osteopathic Board of Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine. Dr. Hansen currently practices at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth, Texas. She also has teaching responsibilities with the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Worth, Texas.
Dr. Hansen received her Doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine at A.T. Still University, School of Osteopathic Medicine in Mesa, Arizona. Dr. Hansen completed her residency in Family Medicine & Osteopathic Neuromuscular Medicine at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth, Texas. She was named the Resident of the Year by the American Academy in 2019. Dr. Hansen completed her fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky.
Prior to becoming a physician, Dr. Hansen spent almost 15 years training athletes of all ages, genders, and competitive levels. She has an enthusiastic curiosity both in and out of the clinic. Dr. Hansen enjoys exploring the globe locally and internationally in her free time.
