HIV in 2025: What the Generalist Physician Should Know


Learning Objectives:
1. Learners will be able to understand and apply the CDC’s updated algorithm for HIV testing and diagnosis.
2. Learners will be able to understand key principles of HIV management, including indications for starting antiretroviral therapy, the concept of undetectable = untransmittable, and primary care for people living with HIV.
3. Learners will be able to identify and become familiar with effective HIV prevention strategies, including HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).
4. Learners will demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the HIV care continuum, recognizing the importance of early diagnosis, linkage to care, treatment adherence, and regular monitoring to optimize health outcomes for individuals with HIV.
5. Learners will identify common barriers to care and treatment adherence faced by individuals living with HIV and develop strategies to enhance patient retention in care and improve engagement through supportive interventions.
6. Learners will become familiar with and be able to apply the latest evidence-based guidelines for HIV management from leading health organizations, ensuring that their clinical practice reflects the most current standards of care.
7. Learners will acquire skills to assess and address social drivers of health impacting patient access to HIV care, including socioeconomic status, housing, and mental health, to create comprehensive and individualized treatment plans.
