Travel Medicine: Updates & Considerations in the Era of COVID

Learning Objectives:
•    
Learners will describe the key components of pretravel consultation.
•    Learners will be able to provide region-specific travel advice, no matter where the patient is traveling: Central/South America, Eastern Europe, Africa, or Asia
•    Learners will confidently give advice on health risks when traveling internationally.
•    Learners will provide patients with information to make a “travel health kit.”
•    Learners will provide up-to-date and relevant medical advice to their patients.
•    Learners will identify appropriate vaccinations and medications depending on location and risk: Outline resources you can use to offer pre-travel counseling easily and effectively in your practice.

Accreditation Statement:
The Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians.  MAOPS designates this program for a maximum of 1 AOA Category 1-A CME credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation.

AMA (Allopathic) Credit Designation:
The Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.MAOPS designates this enduring activity for a maximum of 1
AMA PRA Category 1 Creditsä.  Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Grievance Policy:
All grievances should be in writing and should specify the nature of the grievance.  Initially, all grievances should be directed to MAOPS Executive Director, who will then forward said grievance to the Education & Convention Committee.  All grievances will receive an initial response in writing within 30 days of receipt.  If the participant does not receive a satisfactory response, then they can then submit a complaint in writing to the Bureau of Osteopathic Education of the AOA at 142 East Ontario Street, Chicago, IL 60611.

 

 

Logan J. Banks, DO, FAAFP

Dr. Logan Banks is a Medical Missionary who has been living in East Africa for the past 10 years. He is an Associate Professor of Medicine with Hope Africa University in Burundi. He and his family recently moved to Kenya, where he serves as a campus physician for Rift Valley Academy, a missionary boarding school outside of Nairobi, Kenya.

Dr. Banks is a graduate of A.T. Still University - Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (ATSU-KCOM) in Kirksville, Missouri. He completed his residency in Family Medicine at CoxHealth (COV FMR) in Springfield, Missouri. In 2010, he completed a fellowship in International Family Medicine at Via Christi in Wichita, Kansas. He also completed a fellowship in Obstetrics at CoxHealth. After five years on faculty at Cox FMR, Dr. Banks and his family responded to a call to missions. They moved to Burundi, where he joined the clinical faculty of Hope Africa University by teaching at the rural site, Kibuye Hope Hospital. Dr. Banks is board-certified in family medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine.
