The presentation will review common pediatric skin infections. Examples of skin infections that will be discussed include warts, birthmarks, acne, and eczema. Dr. Trotter will discuss how to perform diagnostic assessments on these skin infections and review various treatment plans for managing these skin infections. 

Learning Objectives:
• Learners will be able to recognize the clinical features of common pediatric skin conditions, including eczema, acne, warts, and various types of birthmarks, allowing for accurate diagnosis and differentiation among similar conditions.
• Learners will develop practical skills in performing appropriate diagnostic assessments for pediatric skin conditions, including physical examination techniques and when to consider referral for specialized testing or dermatological evaluation.
• Learners will be equipped to formulate and implement evidence-based treatment plans for managing pediatric skin conditions, including topical therapies, systemic medications, and non-pharmacological approaches tailored to the individual needs of pediatric patients.
• Learners will gain insights into the underlying mechanisms and contributing factors associated with eczema, acne, warts, and birthmarks, which will enhance their understanding of these conditions and guide effective management strategies.

Accreditation Statement:
The Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. MAOPS designates this program for a maximum of 1 AOA Category 1-A CME credit(s) and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation.

The Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Shannon Trotter, DO, FAAD, FAOCD

Dr. Shannon Trotter earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology with a minor in Psychology from the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio. She graduated from medical school at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine in Athens, Ohio, in 2006. Following medical school, she completed her residency in Dermatology at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens, Georgia, where she served as Chief Resident. After residency, Dr. Trotter completed a fellowship in Cutaneous Oncology at Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts. She then was the Director of the Pigmented Lesion Clinic at the Ohio State University from 2011-2017. She is currently in private practice with Dermatologists of Central States and is the Associate Program Director for the OhioHealth Dermatology Residency Program in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Trotter is also an Assistant Clinical Professor at Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine in Athens, Ohio. Dr. Trotter is board-certified in Dermatology by the American Osteopathic Board of Dermatology.

Dr. Trotter has several clinical interests, including prevention, detection, and treatment of skin cancer and health policy and advocacy. She is a past president of the Ohio Dermatological Association and served on the American Academy of Dermatology State Society Relationships Committee. In addition, she is a District 2 Councilor for the Ohio State Medical Association and an alternate delegate to the American Medical Association. Dr. Trotter received the American Academy of Dermatology’s Presidential Citation Award in 2017, the Ohio Dermatological Association’s Distinguished Service Award in 2018, and the Ohio Osteopathic Association’s Mentor of the Year Award in 2021. She has been recognized nationally for being in the top ten percent of physicians for patient satisfaction.

Outside the office, Dr. Trotter enjoys reading, traveling, and baking. In addition, she also loves public speaking and helping patients understand the importance of skin health. Her favorite part of the day is spending time with her family and Shetland sheepdog named Charlie.

Dr. Trotter discloses she is a promotional speaker for Castle Biosciences, Pfizer, Sun Pharmaceuticals, and Verrica Pharmaceuticals. She also discloses that she is a research supporter for Castle Biosciences, Acelyrin, Amgen, and AbbVie. All relevant financial relationships have been mitigated.
