Trends in Sports Medicine

This presentation covers the latest updates in sports injury management, including concussion protocols and emerging therapies like PRP. Participants will learn decision-making guidelines for referring patients to specialists and integrating psychological and dental considerations into sports medicine care. The session also explores the application of osteopathic principles, offering practical techniques such as OMT to improve patient outcomes in sports-related injuries.

1.    Demonstrate updated proficiency in knee injury assessment and treatment
2.    Apply evidence-based strategies to prevent and treat common sports injuries.
3.    Utilize osteopathic principles, including OMT techniques, to enhance patient recovery and functional outcomes. 
4.    Implement interdisciplinary collaboration with psychologists to optimize holistic care for athletes.
5.    Employ clear referral criteria to ensure timely specialist involvement, improving patient outcomes in complex cases

Accreditation Statement:
The event has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) through the joint providership of the Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS) and Kansas City University (KCU) College of Osteopathic Medicine. MAOPS is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

AMA (Allopathic) Credit Designation:
MAOPS is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. MAOPS designates this activity for a maximum of .75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

AOA (Osteopathic) Credit Designation:
MAOPS is accredited by the AOA to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. MAOPS designates this program for a maximum of .75 AOA Category 1-A CME Credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation in this activity.

Planning Committee:
The KCU CME Committee members serve as the CME Planning Committee for this conference. Membership of the committee includes faculty and staff from KCU and may include physicians from local communities. Grievance Policy:
All grievances should be in writing and specify the nature of the grievance.  Initially, a grievance should be directed to the KCU Continuing Medical Education Director, who will then forward said grievance to the CME Committee.  Grievances should be emailed to the KCU CME Director.  All grievances will receive an initial response from KCU within 30 days of receipt. KCU will resolve the grievance if possible. 

If the participant does not receive a satisfactory response from KCU, they can then submit the grievance in writing to the KCU’s accredited sponsor, the Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS). Grievances should be emailed to the MAOPS Executive Director.  All grievances will receive a response from MAOPS in writing within 30 days of receipt.  MAOPS will resolve the grievance, if possible. 

If the participant does not receive a satisfactory response from MAOPS, they can then submit the grievance in writing to the Council on Continuing Medical Education of the AOA at 142 E Ontario St., Chicago, IL 60611.
 

Kevin Witte, DO

Kevin Witte, DO, is a fellowship-trained and board-certified orthopedic surgeon at Sano Orthopedics. He specializes in knee, shoulder, and elbow care. He has a special interest in athletic injury prevention and injuries of the throwing athlete.

A native of Windsor, MO, Dr. Witte obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He attended medical school at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences while obtaining an MBA in Healthcare Leadership from Rockhurst University. He completed a fellowship in orthopedic sports medicine at the Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine in Gulf Breeze, FL, working under the leadership of world-renowned orthopedic surgeon, Dr. James Andrews. During his sports medicine fellowship, he learned the latest techniques in treating knee injuries, elbow complications, and shoulder conditions in athletes of all ages. He also learned how to manage an entire sports program and the relationships between parents, teams, and coaches that coincide with that management.

Dr. Witte is an associate clinical professor of KCU and the chief of surgery at St. Luke’s South Hospital. Dr. Witte’s passions include athletic injury prevention, regenerative medicine, and injuries of the throwing athlete.

Those who know Dr. Witte will say he carries steadfast love and kindness in all he does. An avid hunter, fisherman, and overall outdoorsman, he is driven to help patients live healthy and active lifestyles.
